Five reasons why we suggest making this historically rich Mexican surf spot your next warm-weather vacation.
The W Punta de Mita: Nestled at the foot of the lush palm-tree covered hills of the Riviera Nayarit on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, lies one of the hippest places to base yourself to explore the region; A place where jet-setters flock from all over the globe to sun themselves poolside while listening to DJ beats, to sip Mexican cocktails and practice their surf skills on some of the best waves on the planet (in bath temperature waters, no less). The W hotel chain’s slogan is “Whatever, Whenever” and this location stands up to its name with impeccable service and unique amenities including an open-24/7 Infinity pool.
From the moment we were greeted at the entrance of the property to be driven through lush jungle gardens to the lobby area, to when we stepped into the grand lobby featuring mosaic tile floors and whimsical Mexican papel picado (perforated paper) room dividers, it was clear that the hotel had perfected the balance of offering upscale luxury while celebrating the area’s rich historic culture and maintaining the beauty of its natural setting.
All just a few minutes walk to the property’s private white sand beach, the modern contemporary bungalows and rooms are adorned with boho-chic surf touches (think full-scale murals of surfers with a likeness to Frida Khalo and neon pink throw pillows and blankets sourced from the nearby surf town of Sayulita). The Jungle Rooms as mine was, feature floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the surrounding lush greenery, which I took in while relaxing in the large soaker tub (and listening to the soothing sound of chirping tree frogs). Mouthwatering Mexican Cuisine: I still dream of the seaside ceviche and taco feast we enjoyed with sand between our toes while overlooking the ocean on our second day at the W. Made by chefs who work out of an old Chevy permanently parked next to the W’s pool, the Cevecheria serves up extremely fresh Mexican specialties to poolside and Wet Deck & Pool diners. Ours were thoroughly enjoyed and washed down with hibiscus cocktails. For breakfast, lunch and dinner, the hotel’s main restaurant, Mesa Uno, is a must. I loved starting the day with either huevos rancheros or chilaquiles, plus green juice and good strong coffee while sitting on the restaurant’s terrace. For a special dinner experience and a break from Mexican cuisine (if anyone ever needs that), there is also the beautifully decorated Spice Market, an upscale Vietnamese restaurant where a DJ turns tables some evenings.
The Spa Experience: Nestled in the rolling hills above the hotel in a structure boasting natural stone floors and white wash décor, the hotel’s Away Spa offers a tranquil respite from the resort’s youthful energy. Here, guests can select from an array of luxurious and rejuvenating treatments including massages, facials, waxing, exfoliation, manicures and pedicures. Our group began one morning with a yoga class in the covered, open-air studio, then headed for a therapeutic massage using locally sourced organic, natural oils and herbs. (Because everyone needs to relax a bit before spending the day at the beach, right?).
Endless Activities: Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation or a bit of both, the W Punta de Mita is the ideal home base from which to explore the surrounding area. While our first few days involved surf lessons with the W’s very patient instructor (I stood up on the board on my third try!) and trips to the nearby surf towns of Sayulita and Punta de Mita to wander the cobblestone streets and purchase local handicrafts, the last few days were more low-key. (Read: lounging in a seaside cabana with a cocktail in hand, and meditating to the sound of crashing waves as the cabana’s white drapes billowed in the wind). There’s also fabulous golf course surrounded by virgin jungles such as the Litibu Golf Course where you can take in views of the beach while you play the 18 holes. Oh, and how could I forget the boat ride to Marietas Island hidden within a crater where our group spotted indigenous Blue Footed Booby Birds?
